Managing Consortium Boards

July 21, 2015

What strategies are successful in managing your consortium board through changes in membership and leadership? How do you bring new members up to speed? And how can you energize and engage your board? For this webcast, we assembled an expert panel representing over 30 years of consortium leadership. They offered their take on one of the greatest challenges to consortium impact and success: transition. The dialog was guided by our guest moderator, Dr. Cathy Trower, a consultant, coach, and author of The Practitioner’s Guide to Governance as Leadership: Building High Performing Nonprofit Boards.

Presenters: Neal Abraham, Executive Director of Five Colleges, Inc.; Barbara McFadden Allen, Executive Director of the Committee on Institutional Cooperation; Christopher Welna, President of the Associated Colleges of the Midwest; and Cathy A. Trower, President of Trower & Trower, Inc.

Consortium Leadership: The Search Firm's Perspective

September 18, 2018

What does it take to be the leader of a college consortium amidst the changing landscape of higher education? ACL members certainly hold viewpoints of their own, forged from experience and observation. But do our opinions comport with the perspectives of those responsible for finding tomorrow's collaborative leaders?

For this event, Kiernan Mathews, Ed.D., of the Collaborative on Academic Careers in Higher Education (COACHE) interviewed two search firm representatives to share their views on what kind of leadership consortia are seeking right now. The experts, Jim Sirianni, Ph.D., Partner, Storbeck/Pimentel & Associates, and Jeff Kessner, Managing Associate, Isaacson, Miller, brought their knowledge earned from recent, high-profile searches for consortium heads, and they compared and contrasted those experiences with other executive searches. This conversation is most pertinent to consortium leaders, those with aspirations to become one, and the boards responsible for finding and supporting their consortium's next executive.

Managing Change to Sustain Collaboration

March 12, 2019

All collaborative leaders are engaged in change. How to plan for, manage, and sustain change are topics of ongoing discussion and, sometimes, “hit or miss” approaches. ACL members seek to “do” change in the right ways in order to make the most positive impact on our members.

The webinar covers known models of change management and discuss application methods to enhance collaborative initiatives.

Presenters: Charlene Bergstresser, Program Director at the Lehigh Valley Association of Independent Colleges; and Christine Kimball, Director of Strategic Procurement and Susana Velazquez, Program and Budget Manager, both at the Five Colleges of Ohio.

Surviving Presidential Turnover

June 4, 2019

Regardless of maturity and longevity, higher education consortia are vulnerable to member institution presidential turnover.  A departing champion president may have provided the cohesive factor for a consortium.  Presidential successors may not perceive or acknowledge consortium value.  Panelists in this presentation share their insight and recommendations for success.

Presenters: Carole Chabries, PhD (Alverno College); Karina Chavez (Pittsburgh Council on Higher Education); Todd Greene, MA, MPA, CEcD (Atlanta University Center Consortium); and Jim Yankech, PhD (University of Nebraska-Lincoln), Session Facilitator and ACL Individual Member

Leading an Equity Minded Consortium

September 24, 2019

While consortia often lead cross-institutional initiatives addressing inclusion and equity in higher education, our own organizations may not present as diverse a face to the public. Like the academy itself, lack of diversity in a consortium office may be a function of small size, hiring practices or the failure to create a truly inclusive workplace. How can higher education consortia “walk the walk” of inclusion? Three members of the ACL community share their experiences with--and invite dialog about--creating an inclusive hiring process, creating an inclusive workplace, diversifying your program presence and leveraging partnerships to expand your consortium’s equity profile.

Presenters: Amy Cronin (New York Six), Kiernan Mathews (The Collaborative on Academic Careers in Higher Education), and Jessica Wise (Higher Education Recruitment Consortium). Facilitated by Vicki McGillin (John N. Gardner Institute).
